We just wanted to help."
That's the reason every volunteer spoken to gave for participating in the
final Luv Ya Uvalde Thanksgiving Dinner.
The feast was held Wednesday at the Willie De Leon Civic Center.
Organizer Pat Flores estimated that more than 200 people volunteered their
time and labor.
"Between the people who came last night to help and those who are here
today, we've had a wonderful turnout," she said.
Vic Hilderbran, who has helped organize the event "for years" pointed out
the number of young people involved.
"We've had so many ROTC cadets, and they've been really worked," Hilderbran
said. "They were here until 9:30 Tuesday night decorating, setting up
tables, deboning turkeys, mopping floorsS
"Then this morning we got 20 more turkeys donated, so we called the cadets
back out to help with those. Now they're here helping serve, escorting
people, doing whatever we need.
"We've also got Girl Scouts out here, including Daisies and Brownies. A lot
of high school students are here. The participation has just been amazing,"
he said.
Luv Ya Uvalde was started in 1983 by Pat and Tommy Flores. This week marked
the end of the 20-year tradition.
"There's a part of us that hates to bring this to a close, but as our
parents age we have family obligations that have to come first," Pat said.
"It's been something we'll always treasure, though
