Progress News Writer - Members of Jacksonville’s VFW Post No. 3984 will celebrate July Fourth by breaking ground for a new command post. Ed Stiefer, post commander, said it’s time for a new post, since the one presently being used is 56 years old. “The building will be the same size as the old one,” he said. “We’re a small post; we don’t need a big building.” The local group is composed of some 300-400 members, although Stiefer said they are not all present at all functions. The building will comprise 7,500 square feet, and will be located behind the current building, which will be torn down after work on the new building is completed some time around November or December. The groundbreaking ceremony will include a visiting dignitary, Troy Ellis, assistant to the state VFW commander. After the groundbreaking, the annual barbecue dinner will be held. The public is invited to the noon groundbreaking, and to stay for the dinner, Stiefer said. Mary Beth Garmon may be reached via e-mail at mbgarmon@jacksonvilleprogress.com |
