Memorial services for Ira W. Wilke, 103, of Jacksonville will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Capital Memorial Gardens, IH 35 North in Austin, Texas, with the Rev. Marilyn McNaughton officiating. Services will be by Thompson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Ira Wilke died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in Jacksonville. He was born April 30, 1899, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Wilke in Waverly, Tenn. Mr. Wilke attended grade and high school in Fredericksberg, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was in the military service in 1918 in the Student Army Training Corps at the university. Upon graduation, Mr. Wilke started to work for the Austin Gas Company as plant foreman in 1932 continuing service with the Southern Union Gas Company in various engineering positions. He served as Area Air Conditioning Engineer from 1960 to 1964, covering all Southern Union Gas Company properties in three states. Upon retirement from Southern Union Gas Company, Mr. Wilke continued working for an air conditioning dealer in Austin for 11 years. Mr. Wilke qualified as a Registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in 1938. Mr. Wilke was active in several professional societies. In the American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers he served as president in the Southwest Texas Chapter in 1951 and President of the Austin Chapter in 1960. He served as chapter delegate to the ASHAE national convention a number of times. Mr. Wilke was a member of the Ramshorn Club, serving as president in 1960. He also served a member of the American Gas Company research committee and was a member of the Austin Fire Safety Board, serving as president one year. Mr. Wilke was a member of the committee which wrote the initial Air Conditioning and Heating Ordinance for the City of Austin. Ira Wilke married the former Lelia Gertrude Tebbs, now deceased. He was the father of two daughters; Helene, Mrs. Paul D. McNaughton until her death in 1970, and May Lou, married to Carol H. Meyers, of Jacksonville. He is survived by five grandchildren, Donna Spillers of Dallas, Texas, Duane Meyers of Longview, Texas, Charlotte McNaughton of Washington D.C., Dr. Lauren McNaughton of Salem, Ore., and the Rev. Marilyn McNaughton of Ledyard, Conn.; and 11 great-grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Bengtson, Henry Frantzen, Lester Frantzen, Doug Kusey, Phillip Koch, Robert Koch, Al Lundstedt and John McKetta. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, or Chemical Engineering of U.T. in Austin. George ‘Big Jim’ Barrett Jr. Services for George “Big Jim” Barrett Jr., 79, of Jacksonville will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Sweet Union Baptist Church. The Revs. Claudell Anderson, Robert Christopher, Freddie Bush, Vernell Alexander and Oscar Verdell will all officiate. Burial will be at New Hope Community Cemetery in Alto under the direction of Williams Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Mr. Barrett died Saturday in Tyler. He was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Alto. He graduated from Fred Douglass High School and Tyler Barber College. He was a member of Sweet Union Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II. Mr. Barrett was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Barrett of Oakland, Calif.; sons, Ivie, Johnny, Gill, Greg and Kenneth Barrett, all of Oakland, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Yolanda and Billy Faison, Patricia and Tyrone Sampson and Carol Barrett, all of Oakland, Calif.; sister, Ozeal White of Jacksonville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Ivie Barrett, Kirk White, Sedric Franklin, Shun Esco, Claude Armstrong, H.P. Peoples, Willie Claiborne and Theddis Vick. Doris Bradley Gonzales Services for Doris Bradley, 91, Gonzales of Rusk will be at 1 p.m., Monday at Rusk Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Phal Carter officiating. Burial will be at Rusk Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Williams Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Mrs. Gonzales died Tuesday in Jacksonville. She was born Aug. 10, 1911, in Rusk. She attended Rusk public school, and she and her late husband were owners and operators of the Gonzales Grocery for many years. She was a member of Mount Pleasant CME Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Gonzales. Survivors include son, Frank Elmo Gonzales of Los Angeles; sister, Mary Bradley Cobb of Galveston, devoted nephew and wife, Oliver and Mary E. Bradley, Jr. of Lufkin; sister, Mary Bradley Jr. of Galveston; and sister-in-law, Lula Bradley of Rusk Friends will serve as pallbearers. Justin Heath Dover Services are pending for Justin Heath Dover, 12, of Maydelle at Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home. |
