Duke R. Friend


Duke Ray Friend, 58, of Charleston, formerly of Spencer, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at home following an extended illness.

He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Raymond Ray and Anna Kay Simmons Friend.

He was employed by Exeter Drilling Company as a tool pusher.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Donna Lee Friend; one daughter, Mary A. Williams of Charleston; one sister, Florence Hunt of Charleston; and five grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Jennifer LeMaster and Michelle Friend; one half-brother, Daniel Friend; two infant sisters, Mary C. and Carol K. Friend.

Services were Sunday at Elk Funeral Home, Charleston, with Rev. David Mitchell officiating. The body was cremated.



Sada Simms


Sada Simms, 82, of Ravenswood died Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at Eldercare of Ripley, following an extended illness.

She was born at Walton, a daughter of the late Melvin and Lilly Hardman Coon.

She was a retired nursing assistant for Jackson General Hospital, Ripley and attended Second Baptist Church, Ravenswood.

She is survived by one son, Berkley Simms of Ravenswood; two daughters, Rebecca Cozart and Veronica Barker, both of Ravenswood; one step-son, Donald Simms of Solomon, Kan.; two step-daughters, Deloris Taylor of Ashland, Ky., and Midge Taylor of West Salem, Ohio; six grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Simms Jr.; two brothers, Opie Coon and Doyal Coon; one step-son, Robert Simms; and one sister, Opal Anderson.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Casto Funeral Home, Ravenswood with Pastor Steve Raines officiating. Graveside service is 3 p.m. at Larch-Harper Cemetery, Walton.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.



David H. Skau


David H. Skau, 76, of Looneyville died Friday, May 10, 2002 at Roane General Hospital.

He was born in Krishnarajapuram, India, a son of the late Olaf Alexander and Maude Elizabeth Kipp Skau.

He was a retired Seventh-day Adventist Church missionary in Southeast Asia with 36 years service.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine Skau; two sons, Dr. David Skau of Portland, Ore., and Dr. Randell Skau of Nigeria, West Africa; two daughters, Sondra Spiva of Collegedale, Tenn., and Nyani Bayen of Bangladesh; one brother, Paul Skau of Tracy, Calif.; one sister, Phyllis Brown of Cave’s Junction, Ore.; and 12 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Dennis Skau.

Services were Wednesday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor J. Allen Fine officiating.


The best man was Ben Greathouse, nephew of the groom, of Spencer. Aaron Atkinson, son of Todd and Susan Cain, served as a groomsman and John Ash, great-nephew of the groom, was the ring bearer.


Music was provided by Myridia and Marvella Boggs, daughters of Jeff and Raveena Boggs, and Chris Williams, son of Don and Pat Williams, all of Spencer.
